Early morning barefoot wandering

May 5, 2012

What was going on at 6 am on the trails of Irvine Park/Barham Ridge/Santiago Oaks?

Solitude*, sunlight and cloud swirls, a pair of teenage coyotes (one with a bad case of the sit-and-itches), a trap door spider’s trap door, a California ground squirrel that chirped like a loud bird, and the fruit punch scent of thick-leaf yerba santa.

*Solitude = lack of hikers and bikers, but plenty of other critters to keep me company.

Tomorrow is the 2nd annual International Barefoot Running Day: wear a smile but no shoes and take a hike (or run) on a trail near you.
